Dreweatts' two-day auction 'Hollycombe House: The Collection of Tim and Virginia Hoare' takes place on 15 & 16 June. The collection, curated together with Robert Kime, offers a unique twist on the Country House style.
Robert Kime, uniquely among interior designers, has risen to eminence in the profession via antique dealing, textile collecting and an abiding passion for putting rooms together in a way that reflects a sense of place and suitability. At Hollycombe House, muted tones alongside traditional fine and decorative furniture combine with confident palettes and colourful fabrics. Here Robert picks out his top ten lots from the auction.
No. 1
Lot 70: An Aubusson Verdure tapestry, probably first half 17th century | Est. £8,000-12,000 (+fees)
"The thing about tapestries is that they do a lot of work in a room and this one is quite beautiful with good colours. I’ve always been keen on tapestries"
No. 2
Lot 30: A George IV mahogany wine cistern, circa 1830, attributed to Gillows | Est. £3,000-5,000 (+fees)
"This is a particularly nice wooden wine cistern as it came with its own column, which is interesting.”
No. 3
Lot 209: A set of fourteen Louis XV style walnut and upholstered side chairs, 19th century | Est. £6,000-8,000 (+fees)
"I bought this set of fourteen chairs, just like this and I love the textiles for the very interesting texture and colour.”
No. 4
Lot 55: Nine various blue and white 'Binh Thuan' shipwreck dishes, provincial Ming, circa 1600 | Est. £1,000-1,500 (+fees)
"I bought hundreds of these - salvaged from a shipwreck. I remember, the auction was in Australia so I got up in the middle of the night to buy them."
No. 5
Lot 269: A George III style mahogany tester bed, late 20th century | Est. £4,000-6,000 (+fees)
"Lovely bed, and I designed the fabric for the hangings. Nice to look back on it, and it still makes a statement."
No. 6
Lot 217: An Irish carved gilt wood pier glass, in the manner of John and Francis Booker of Dublin, late 19th/early 20th century | Est. £8,000-12,000 (+fees)
"The wonderful thing about Irish furniture or mirrors, like this one, is they can make the architecture of the room."
No. 7
Lot 283: Y An Ottoman mother of pearl and bone inlaid occasional table, early 20th century | Est. 200-300 (+fees)
"I love the tables that have a lot of inlay, like this one - that are very white and quite detailed.”
No. 8
Lot 28: An Ottoman style painted octagonal occasional table, 20th century | Est. £200-300 (+fees)
“This is a very useful table; a variant of the model.”
No. 9
Lot 31: Y A large William IV rosewood and upholstered sofa, circa 1835 | Est. £3,000-5,000 (+fees)
"I had the fabric for this sofa woven in Turkey and it’s still just as wonderful.”
No. 10
Lot 49: An Ushak carpet | Est. £5,000-8,000 (+fees)
