Coming up in our Interiors auction on the 12 May, we are pleased to offer The Constable Collection. This is a private collection of painted truncheons, tipstaves and early weapons (Lots 423-472).
The collection has been built up over some years and features a vast array of items with the majority dating from the end of the 18th century through to mid and late 19th century, as well as a Bronze Age example. The more unusual, interesting and scarcer items were sought in finer condition to ensure a broad range of items for the collection. Ahead of the auction we take a look at some of the highlights.
A highlight here is Lot 426, a George III wood and brass Bristol tipstaff. The brass top section is finished with a ball finial and is inscribed with G III R ST. MARY PORT WARD II. It then has a turned mahogany lower section. The present lot carries an estimate of £800-1,000 (+fees).
Another Georgian example is Lot 427, this George III carved mahogany and painted mace. It was made for the Governor of the Hospital of Poor's Portion (Plymouth Work House), and is designed in bannister form. The square-section head is decorated with the royal coat of arms of the City of Plymouth. Another coat of arms is also featured, showing the initials W H.
Here we have Lot 448, an early Victorian painted and dated wood truncheon. This was made for the Hundred of Whalesbone. This example features painted and gilt decoration with a crown above the Royal Coat of Arms and is inscribed HUNDRED OF WHALESBONE, above a cartouche with two dolphins. it also includes the date 1843 and the name FREDK. BOORE. The reverse then features the Arms of the Marquess of Abergavenny.
Finally, here we wanted to highlight Lot 472, a Bronze Age Iranian Luristan royal baton mace-head cudgel. It dates between 2000 BC - 1500 BC. The upper half is cast with herring bone pattern panels. This early example is estimated at £700-800 (+fees).
