On 4 & 5 July, we have our Fine Wine, Champagne, Port and Spirits auction. A highlight from the auction is Lot 28, a bottle of 1900 Château d'Yquem. Here, Senior Wine Consultant, Mark Robertson tells us more about this special bottle.
One of my favourite wine facts from this period of history is that, due to consecutive abundant harvests, wine was not sold by the bottle in taverns, but rather the custom was to drink up the excess stock, paying on an hourly basis instead. It must have been like a national fresher's week but with berets and a degree of self-control. How I would have approached this sale technique is between myself and I.
Luckily this bottle escaped from this vinous orgy and was put away, and we are delighted to offer it in our July auction. Having been re-corked at the Chateau in 1996 and stored beautifully by a collector and restaurateur ever since, this 1900 Château d’Yquem is a compelling combination of a mouth-watering colour, provenance and historical importance. Château d’Yquem’s enchantment is her ability to age, and I often tell my clients to buy Château Climens for themselves, but Château d’Yquem for their descendants. Dreweatts is privileged to be able to offer the opportunity to own this great bottle and create unique memories. At 123 years of age, I believe this is one of the finest and most important bottles of mature Château d'Yquem on the market today.
This is an online only auction, taking place on Tuesday 4 & Wednesday 5 July, 12 noon BST.
