On Tuesday 28 May, we have our Fine Wine, Champagne, Vintage Port and Spirits auction, offering the perfect opportunity to stock up ready for summer, whether you are looking to acquire rare single bottles, individual cases or whole collections. A particular highlight of our May auction is a case of the 1992 Dominus, Napa Valley. Here, Senior Wine Consultant, Mark Robertson, tells us more about this special wine.
When we offer a wine that I have always coveted; rather than read what the professional critics have said, I look towards my peers on Cellar Tracker, who offer a more detailed, accurate, up to date and often fun view of the wine. For this particular vintage, recent comments have included, "Holy Hell this was good" and "Like a perfect Bordeaux with an extra layer of sexiness", or the usual remorse about it being a last bottle, and as expected, many notes comparing it to the finest left bank Bordeaux in a perfect place with years of life ahead.
Dominus, from the stable of Christian Moueix of Petrus fame, can be described as a Californian love letter to Bordeaux. With a restrained 13.5%, this Cabernet dominated Bordeaux Blend meets Lewis Hamilton's accent somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic. There were only 6,000 cases made of the 1992 and I suspect this case might be one of the last chances to acquire this wine, and even more so in magnum format with perfect provenance. The 1992 is an outstanding wine, another majestic ambassador from Napa Valley, and a vintage not to be lost in the shadow of the 1991 and 1994.
