At the turn of the 20th century the fountain pen made its technical and commercial breakthrough as a writing instrument, as inventors and craftsmen combining forces. ‘Manufacturers of high-class gold and fountain pens’ was the claim made by the Simplo Filler Pen Co., as the firm of Montblanc was then known. In 1909 the name ‘Montblanc’ came into use – a neat way to associate its pens, the pinnacle of writing instruments, with Mont Blanc, the highest and most majestic peak in the Alps. Four years later the white star emblem became the brand logo and trademark.
Since the 1980s Montblanc has demonstrated a commitment to art, culture and charity through its series of highly innovative limited edition pens and here we present three stunning examples of such fountain pens from the forthcoming March auction.
This special theme skeleton pen honours John Harrison, inventor of the chronometer. The skeleton design forms a world map, with transparent blue celluloid representing the oceans while the continents are made of solid gold overlay.
A small diamond on the pen’s barrel marks the position of Mont Blanc.
One of Montblanc’s most extraordinary designs, the Brandenburger Tor has all of the stately grace and majesty of the famed Brandenburg Gate from which it derives its design inspiration.
Since 1789, the Brandenburg Gate has symbolised Berlin, one of Europe’s greatest cities and a hotbed of intellectual and artistic activity. Destroyed at the end of World War II and then rebuilt, it now represents a unified Germany, and so stands for strength, reconciliation and unity. Fashioned of lustrous 18 karat solid gold finished in deep blue accents. Twin rings of sparkling brilliant-cut diamonds adorn the section and cap. The cap is decorated with a bold relief of Victory’s chariot.
This fountain pen comes with Montblanc box, international guarantee certificate/information booklet, outer card packaging and white card box.
The Magical Black Widow is encased by a web of 18K solid white gold, featuring a filigree spider studded with black diamonds on the clip. In some cultures, the spider is seen as a symbol of luck, and, in honour of the lucky spider, whose figure 8 shaped body symbolises infinity, Montblanc produced only 88 of these exceptional pens.
This fountain pen also comes with a Montblanc box, international guarantee certificate/information booklet, outer card packaging and white card box.
