On Tuesday 14 & Wednesday 15 April, Dreweatts held a two-day auction of Modern Design & Decorative Art. The sale was led by the collection of art adviser and curator, Silka Rittson-Thomas, whose career has unfolded through a deep passion for the contemporary art world and the history of design. Day-two presented an excellent selection of works that highlighted the innovation of twentieth century design. The sale achieved a total of £770,000 which represented 151% of its pre-sale estimate.
Commenting on the results Head of Modern Design & Decorative Art, Gemma Sanders said “We are delighted with the results! The very stylish curated single-owner groups within, the collection of Silka Rittson-Thomas and the contents of a London property by French interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot, did particularly well, garnering international interest and strong bidding from Europe and the US.
Standout pieces, with exceptional provenance, were the Peter Waals bookcase from Glenfell House in Gloucestershire and the Art Deco picture frame, by luxury Parisian maker Ostertag, commissioned for the US socialite Jessie Woolworth Donahue (1886-1971). Notable sections came from the Swedish Grace furniture of designers Otto Schultz and Axel Einar Hjorth, who both exhibited at the 1925 Paris Exposition for the Swedish pavilion, and silver table wares from the incredible Danish designers of Georg Jensen, namely Harald Nielsen and Johan Rhode.”
