Coming up on Tuesday 25 March, we have our Fine Wine, Champagne, Vintage Port and Spirits auction. We are pleased to be offering a selection of bottles and magnums from Chateau Musar, with vintages dating between 1997-2006. Here, Senior Wine Consultant, Mark Robertson, tells us more about this important estate.
There are only a few wines that can be described as breaking the mould – Penfolds in Australia, Sassicaia in Italy, Cloudy Bay in New Zealand, perhaps even Whispering Angel Rose today, and of course... Chateau Musar.
The story of Chateau Musar is a history lesson - an important dimension to understanding the mystique that led to its global admiration. Sounding not unlike a melodramatic Hollywood scriptwriter, Chateau Musar is essentially a family tale, with dashing French army officers, all set during Lebanon’s romantic, turbulent and often savage 20th century.
It was established in 1930 by Gaston Hochar. The backdrop to the founding of Musar was France’s mandate, thirsty French soldiers and one officer, Ronald Barton of Chateau Langoa Barton, having a particular influence on the original vintages. The everlasting ties with Bordeaux remain today and Gaston’s grandson, Ronald Hochar and his children are still firmly at the helm.
A trinity of historical wine traditions, a love of Bordeaux wines and this young Frenchman. One hundred years later Dreweatts' clients wave their paddle numbers more enthusiastically than ever.
Grown in the fertile Bekaa Valley, east of Beirut, the vineyards enjoy an elevated position and year-round sunshine with mountain breezes. The Cabernet, Cinsault and Carignan are harvested by Bedouins. The wines are made in a slow gentle manner to highlight the ever-changing vintages and are always released 7 years after.
