For those seeking a little oriental inspiration this winter, we have some exquisite Chinese Export highlights coming up in our auction of Fine Furniture, Sculpture, Carpets, Ceramics and Works of Art on 30 November 2022.
This sale contains a number of fascinating examples of Chinese manufacture constructed from exotic hardwoods or decorated lacquer. The western obsession and fascination with the Orient really took off with the establishment of the East India Company in 1600, when the nobility in Britain was suddenly able to acquire oriental goods for their own homes. Chinese Export items were made to English inspired design or to suit European taste and to cater for the longstanding fashion for Asian decorative arts. Particularly for items made in the early part of the eighteenth century, this furniture will have been made to special order, and may have taken a year or more to get to its destination.
Fine examples of Chinese Export furniture can be found in many of the great and historic houses of Britain including Buckingham Palace, Osterley Park, Ham House and Petworth House amongst many other important collections.
It is safe to say that the Orient still fascinates many of us today when designing our interiors, even if our homes and spaces may be a little more modest in size.
