On Wednesday 7 October, we are delighted to present our Modern Design & Decorative Art auction, which includes a set of five guest chairs designed for the 1969 investiture of the Prince of Wales. Led by Lord Snowdon, the design team created a practical yet highly considered piece of royal commemorative furniture, combining innovative flat-pack construction with materials and details reflecting its Welsh and royal associations. Ahead of the sale, Head of Modern Design & Decorative Art, Gemma Sanders tells us more.
When we think of royal memorabilia and commemorative wares, ceramics and smaller trinkets may first come to mind. However, the furniture created for significant royal occasions can offer an equally fascinating insight into design and cultural history.
The chair was designed by a team led by Lord Snowdon, the celebrated British photographer and designer. Best known for his intimate portraits of celebrities, cultural figures and the British Royal Family, Snowdon also played an important role in the design of the furniture produced for the investiture ceremony of the Prince of Wales, which took place at Caernarfon Castle, North Wales, on 1 July 1969.
These chairs were among the first larger-scale examples of flat-pack furniture, with its design carefully considered to be practical, easily transported and straightforward to assemble. Some 4,600 chairs were produced for guests attending the ceremony, who could purchase them afterwards for £12, equivalent to approximately £250 today.
Its construction combines practical design with distinctive Welsh references. The red-stained beech frame is decorated with the Prince of Wales feathers, while the accompanying seat cushion was upholstered in Welsh tweed. Creating a piece that is both functional furniture and a tangible record of a significant royal occasion.
Today, its bold red finish also offers an opportunity to introduce a distinctive accent of colour into an interior, while its provenance and design make it an unusual example of commemorative furniture.
