Ahead of our auction of Fine and Rare Wines and Spirits on 27 June, Mark Robertson, Head of Dreweatts’ Wine department, shares a highlight from the sale.
My parents always used to tell my older smaller brother that “The best things come in small packages”, but without having a similar life-affirming proverb for me. Not even a clumsily invented “Darling you know what they say – Average height…total legend”. I am sure there are many siblings with their feet hanging off the end of a psychiatrist’s couch relaying a similar story. But I think I made my peace with it at the time through my daily and victorious bouts of combat with him.
As a grown up now, I use this saying often and it perfectly epitomizes Domaine Bachelet. To first envisage the famous Domaine Bachelet, one needs to be able to imagine its diminutive size. In the UK we have four units of measurement…. football pitches, the size of Wales, double-decker buses and bags of sugar. The vineyards of Domaine Bachelet cover just less than four football pitches or 4.3 hectares across Burgundy.
We then need to imagine where they are. Of the 28 hectares of the Charmes Chambertin Vineyard, Bachelet has just 0.4 hectares. This sits just between Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey on top of a small hill. In Burgundy, this minutiae matters.
The quality of the wine comes from Denis Bachelet’s work in these vineyard – simple but sensible wine-making, amended according to intuition. It is hard not to fall in love with his wines. From Bourgogne to Charmes, Bachelet is iconic, virile, complex and intense, but has finesse before all things. Bachelet is now at the pantheon of great Burgundy Domaines.
Dreweatts is privileged to offer an eclectic collection of Bourgogne, Gevrey Chambertin and Charmes from 2001-2005. All previously stored in perfect conditions from a private Hampshire cellar.
