Dreweatts is delighted to announce an exhibition of works by Alistair John Erskine - an artist who has perfected the technique of en plein air painting.
This will be the first exhibition curated by Glebe Gallery held in association with Dreweatts. The paintings will be displayed in the recently decorated period rooms at Donnington Priory and the exhibition will open on Friday 16 November, running until Tuesday 20 November 2018.
Alistair Erskine was born in 1959 and has balanced a career as a freelance decorative artist working alongside many internationally renowned designers with his personal passion for painting outdoors.
He has the ability to observe both land and seascapes and captures colour and mood in a manner that imbues his small scale works with the sense and an interpretation of nature in its truest form. With a driving ambition to convey a sense of place his works draw heavily on light and tone. His early work was pure in terms of the representation of nature with little reference to the human, however the artist’s development in his most recent series of fishing pictures from the banks of the River Test combine his passion for fishing, capturing the subtlety of light and shade of the chalk streams of Hampshire and Wiltshire whilst introducing the human form in the most delicate manner.
Within his oeuvre perhaps the most surprising are the bold still life pictures which draw on his Scottish roots and his admiration for the Scottish colourists; with blocked colour and strong outlines these pictures are fresh in both palette and observation, conveying the delicacy of nature through pure and brilliant colour.
