Stocking up ready for Christmas? Mark Robertson, Head of Dreweatts Wine Department, picks out his top picks from the December auction to help you cater to all your guests this festive season.
For our Christmas sale, I can separate our auction into two camps. Wine if you really love your relatives and wine if you just like them a lot. I am afraid there is nothing for anyone who has been dreading seeing them all year and want to make the point through the medium of the bottle.
For Burgundy lovers, there are many Bourgogne rouges with just the right amount of age from some of the most celebrated growers. A personal favourite of mine is the 2005 Bourgogne rouge, Domaine Barthod in magnums.
If you have a rich but elderly great aunt for lunch, who is still working out who to leave her money to, then the wines of Domaines Fourier, Liger Belair or Rene Engel should put you in pole position.
From Bordeaux, alongside the great and the good, are some lovely mixed cases of beautifully stored mature wines. These cases are great examples of why buying wine from Dreweatts is both fun and unique.
A sensational Italian selection travels the length and breadth of the country from Sicily to the Alps. It is worth noting the 2007 Barolos from Guiseppe Mascarello. A relatively unknown producer, but hugely respected and at 12 years old, this perfectly balanced Nebbiolo has found its perfect place.
I apologise for the lack of sweet wines, especially at a time of year that they are so often enjoyed, something we will rectify for next year.
We hope you enjoy some of the many treasures we are so proud to offer and wish you a very happy Christmas.
