Asian and Islamic Works of Art: Day 1 | Japanese, Islamic and Indian Works of Art
Our sale of Japanese, Islamic and Indian Works of Art on 22 May features over 200 lots, comprised of beautiful Indian silver and pottery, impressive Japanese bronzes, as well as a truly exceptional and vibrant collection of Iznik and Damascus tiles from the estate of distinctive British painter, the Late Sir Howard Hodgkin, CH, CBE.
LOT 40 | A large Iznik polychrome glazed fritware tile, Ottoman Turkey, circa 1575, of square form with central floral medallion in ‘sealing wax’ red surrounded by scrolling Saz leafs and further foliage, mounted for wall hanging, 30.5cm high x 29.5cm wide. Tiles of this design decorate the Has Oda (Privy Chamber) of Murad III in the Harem of the Topkapi Palace (see Rogers, J.M., (ed.), The Topkapi Saray Museum. Architecture, Boston, 1988, no.67). For a group of tiles from the same series in the Tareq Rajab Museum, Kuwait, see Féhérvari, no.7. See also Aksit, p.41 &42. Two further tiles are in the Khalili collection (Geneva 1995, no.122), and a fragment in the Sadberk Hanim Museum (see Altun 1991, I.66).
Provenance: From a French Private Collection prior to 2005, acquired by Millner Manolatos 2006 (Published in February 2006 exhibition catalogue, item 30) where purchased by the late Sir Howard Hodgkin CH CBE.
Note: Lots 1 – 42 are a collection of Iznik and Damascus tiles from the Estate of the late Sir Howard Hodgkin CH CBE.
LOT 163 | Masamitsu (Shoko): A Miya-O style Japanese Parcel Gilt Bronze Figure of an Archer, he kneels with his left leg thrust forward, in a show of strength and prowess as he pulls back on his bow, he wears an eboshi and a loose robe over his armour, signed with a gilt plaque to the back “Masamitsu”, height 28.5cms, Meiji Period.
