On Wednesday 7 October, we are delighted to present our Modern Design & Decorative Art auction, featuring furniture, sculpture, ceramics, glass and decorative objects from across the 20th and 21st centuries. Among the highlights are a number of pieces that reflect the distinctive character of Hollywood Regency, from period examples to contemporary interpretations of this glamorous style. Ahead of the sale, Head of Modern Design & Decorative Art, Gemma Sanders tells us more.
Originating on the West Coast of the USA during the 1930s and reaching its height of popularity in the 1960s, Hollywood Regency combines cinematic glamour with mid-century sophistication. Characterised by polished surfaces, rich tones and high-impact details, the style creates interiors designed to make an impression, transporting us to an era when cocktail hour could feel like an everyday occasion.
Think polished brass, gilded finishes and chrome alongside jewel tones, high-gloss surfaces, oversized statement pieces and ornate detailing. Dramatic lighting, sculptural coffee tables, decorative mirrors, bar carts and geometric patterns all contribute to the style’s exuberant character, with tactile materials and bold contrasts creating maximum visual impact.
Our upcoming Modern Design & Decorative Art auction features a selection of works that capture this glamorous aesthetic, including both period pieces and contemporary designs that offer a modern interpretation of Hollywood Regency.
