In our upcoming sale this month, we have two highlights that would enhance any study or office. Both from the Regency period in the manner of George Bullock, we have a brass and tortoiseshell ink well, as well as a pollard oak library cabinet.
This Regency pollard oak library cabinet, circa 1815, in the manner of George Bullock has a solid superstructure with pierced brass gallery and scrolling anthemion cast supports above the rectangular black marble top.
With a panel cupboard door opening to a shelved interior, flanked by tapering pilasters headed by flowerhead roundels, with a small cupboard door to one side, sitting on a plinth base, our specialists expect this piece to achieve between £3,000-5,000 (+fees) at Dreweatts on 11 September.
Consigned from a country estate in Dumfriesshire, a related cabinet by George Bullock executed in ‘figured’ oak and incorporating related patera roundels, is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (accession number: 2014.67).
LOT 139: This Regency brass and scarlet tortoiseshell inlaid ink stand, circa 1815, in the manner of George Bullock, was directly inspired by designs in the Wilkinson Tracings.
The dished rectangular tray is centred by three rectangular cut-glass ink-wells, two with lids inlaid with a flower flanked by a pen tray on each side, 40cm long, 27.5cm wide.
This design of marquetry is among a collection of tracings (originally a scrapbook) called Tracings by Thomas Wilkinson from the designs of the late Mr Bullock 1820, now in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. It is likely that Thomas Wilkinson had worked for Bullock which explains his access to the original designs.
