On Tuesday 20 August, we have our next monthly sale of Fine Wine, Champagne, Vintage Port and Spirits. A highlight is 1994 vintage of Penfolds Grange. Here Senior Wine Specialist, Caroline Shepherd tells us more about Max Schubert, the mastermind behind this iconic wine.
Penfolds Grange is something of an anomaly in the fine wine world. Grange is not produced from a single vineyard or small plot, as one might expect of one of the most highly-prized (and priced) Australian wines. Instead, the grapes for this iconic wine are carefully sourced from various sub-regions in South Australia. Shiraz is the dominant varietal, with up to 15% Cabernet Sauvignon in certain years.
Founded in 1844 in Magill near Adelaide by pioneering Doctor Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary, Penfolds was already the largest winery in South Australia well before Max Schubert became Chief Winemaker in 1948. It was Schubert who led the ‘Grange experiment’ in secret after Penfolds’ board had initially dismissed his project. Following a trip to Europe and the vineyards of Bordeaux, Schubert’s vision was to create a wine with ageing potential, and thus began years of clandestine winemaking in the cellars at Magill Estate. In 1960, Grange finally received the nod and swiftly rose to prominence, becoming the standard-bearer for Australian wines. The first commercial release was the 1952 vintage, the bookend of an unbroken string of vintages ever since. The unforgettable taste of Grange continues to create a frisson of excitement among wine lovers across the world.
In our Fine Wine, Vintage Port, Champagne and Spirits auction on 20 August, we are thrilled to offer 3 bottles of Grange 1994 – a perfect gift for a 30th birthday or anniversary this year – or a splendid addition to any collection. The 1994 growing season in Australia was slightly cooler than usual, producing an elegant, intensely aromatic, complex and multi-layered wine with years ahead of it still.
