The auction will feature works by some of the greats of Modern British sculpture – Henry Moore, Lynn Chadwick and Elisabeth Frink.
Henry Moore’s Reclining Nude, Crossed Feet from 1980 is a superb example of one of the artist’s most sought-after subject matter and perfectly embodies his mastery of form in a proportion that would suit the domestic setting. With its wonderfully tactile green patina, Head of Queen (study) offers an insight into the artist’s working practice as a preparatory piece for his monumental King and Queen sculpture of 1952-3. Completing this group is Elisabeth Frink’s Small Dog, from an edition of 10 conceived in 1986 and Lynn Chadwick’s Walking Cloaked Figures VIII, a fantastic example of the sculptor’s inimitable standing figures.
The sale already boasts a striking still life by Mary Fedden, a playfully colourful port scene by Scottish artist Leon Morrocco and sunset view of Arisaig by John Houston. Also featuring is a group of works by the East London Group of painters, including a great example of one of Elwin Hawthorne’s London views from 1936.
Another highlight is a group of paintings by northern artist, Arthur Delaney, from the private collection of Manchester racehorse betting tycoon Selwyn Demmy (1932-2020). The collection comprises over twenty works including iconic views of Manchester, Liverpool and the surrounding area. The busy street scenes and industrial views all pay homage to Delaney’s hero and mentor, L.S. Lowry and whilst they are realistic in their depiction, they are also highly nostalgic, drawing as their inspiration the Manchester of the 1930s with its smoke-laden skies, gas lamps and busy trams.
