I am regularly asked what is my favourite wine. My usual response is to mumble about Austrian Pinot Noir or USA Chardonnay, but my heart and head always silently scream Bordeaux. There is no other bit of unique land on earth for making such breathtaking wines. 

Dreweatts wine auctions allow people to confidently buy and drink these wines, often mature, vanishing or disappeared from the market and in bottles, cases and different formats. 

In this cellar you will take a remarkable journey through Bordeaux. From humble brilliance to the mighty and magnificent, many Châteaux, regions and vintages are represented. My personal highlights are:

1990 Château Cheval Blanc

A wine that, as it grows older, is now journeying from a great wine to “a magical experience” and no doubt one day will take on that privileged legend mantle when only a few bottles remain.

2006 Château Palmer 

I remember during En primeur tastings this was the “have you tried yet?” wine. The press were restrained compared to the exuberance of the trade. It has continued to mature into a truly outstanding wine and this underappreciated brilliant year is everything that great Palmer should be.

 2001 Vieux Château Certan 

I adore Vieux Château Certan. A beautiful house, one of the oldest in Pomerol and, until much of the 20th century, thought of as Petrus’s superior neighbour. It’s just pipette, barrel and owner. One wine, no puffery, golf carts and exuberance and one is always in and out thinking “wow”. The 2001 is a truly outstanding wine, perhaps better than the fabled 2000 and without the expectation and price tag the latter brings.

From Scotland, with whisky from 1946 to 1972 and with multiple other distilleries on offer, Macallan takes centre stage. One of the highlights is the 1946 Macallan Select Reserve.

Bottled in 1998, it is one of a few bottles available in the world. It is unusual, in that it was made with peated malt due to the high post-war prices of coal. Recognised as one of the great whiskies to come from the Distillery, it is a rare privilege to offer it from this great cellar.

Auction Details

Collected over many years, the wines and whiskies in this sale have been stored perfectly in the temperature-controlled cellar of a fine Wiltshire country house, or they have come directly from The Wine Society.
