On Wednesday 9 & Thursday 10 November, we have our two-day auction of Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art: to include Japanese, Indian and Islamic Art. On Day One, we are thrilled to be offering porcelain and jade items from the collection of Anthony de Rothschild (1887-1961) and sold by order of a member of the Rothschild family (Lots 1-27).
Here, Designer Tomasz Starzewski and Fine Art Consultant Andy Waters discuss how they came to re-discover this charming collection thought to be gifted by a father - world-renowned collector Anthony de Rothschild (1887-1961) - to his beloved daughter, Renée Louise Marie de Rothschild (1927-2015), later known as the talented horse trainer, Mrs. Peter Robeson.
Anthony de Rothschild was one of the earliest collectors of Oriental works amassing his extensive collection from his travels during the 20th century, keeping meticulous records of everything he bought, and choosing only museum-quality pieces.
While most of it had been passed on through other generations and was accounted for, this delightful motley crew of porcelain animals from Anthony de Rothschild's Chinese porcelain collection was recently rediscovered at his daughter Renée's private home and is a touching insight into the bond of love that extended between a father and daughter over their lifetimes.
