On Tuesday 31 March, we are delighted to present our monthly auction of Fine Wine, Champagne, Vintage Port and Spirits. The sale opens with two spectacular bottles of Lanson Red Label champagne from the 1969 vintage. Ahead of the auction, Dreweatts’ Senior Wine Consultant, Mark Robertson tells us more.
My Grandfather, one of the first Masters of Wine worked for Lanson in the 1930s and although I never met him, I always think of him working away in the cellars nearly 100 years ago when I see a bottle.
For just five vintages between 1964 and 1975, Champagne Lanson introduced an eye-catching twist on its flagship wine: a ten-pin skittle–shaped bottle known as the “Quille”, designed to bowl customers over.
We have recently uncovered bottles from the exceptionally rare 1969 vintage, a discovery that serves as a reminder that no two days at Dreweatts are ever the same.
Purchased on release, these bottles have been lying undisturbed in the cellar of a fine Wiltshire house ever since, offering wonderful provenance.
The 1969 vintage was a strong one, with the acidity required for long ageing, although it was originally released into a nervous financial market. These examples may well represent some of the last remaining bottles in the world.
The distinctive bottle shape hints at a marketing meeting after a particularly long lunch, or perhaps a school competition gone awry, yet what truly matters is the wine within. A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, the condition and provenance of these bottles give every confidence that they have matured exactly as they should over the past 57 years.
This is just a tiny snapshot from our March sale, which features some of the finest wines from across the globe, at a range of price points.
Dreweatts continues to be one of the most compelling places to buy wine today and with a series of exceptional, important and unique cellars still to be announced, 2026 promises to be one of our most exciting years yet.
This is a live online auction with an auctioneer. The auction will take place on Tuesday 31 March (starting at 10.30am BST) at Dreweatts Newbury, but please note all wine and spirits are stored off-site at LCB Eton Park.
