On Wednesday 19 March, Dreweatts held the landmark auction The Mastery of Fabergé, Jewellery and Objects of Vertu. The auction offered a stunning selection of works by the renowned Russian jeweller Fabergé and his contemporaries, predominantly drawn from a distinguished British private collection, and included jewellery, objets d'art and rare accessories. World-renowned Fabergé expert Geoffrey Munn, described the collection as, “nothing short of extraordinary", adding, "It epitomised the unparalleled craftsmanship, elegance, and innovation that made Fabergé internationally famous.”
The auction captivated an international audience, making for a thrilling day of competitive and spirited bidding, culminating in a white glove event. With a 100% sell-through rate, the auction totalled £997,000 (including buyer's premium) - 251% of pre-sale estimates. Commenting on the result, Head of Jewellery, Charlotte Peel said, "The success of today’s white glove Fabergé sale clearly demonstrates the strength of the market at present. We were pleased to be able to build a platform to present this collection to an international market and we are delighted with the result and most importantly our vendors were very happy too."

Jewellery performed exceptionally well, with several pendants achieving top results. Notable highlights included Lot 16, a yellow sapphire and diamond pendant that sold for £43,950; Lot 18, an aquamarine and diamond pendant/brooch that fetched £25,200; and Lot 77, a diamond set enamel locket pendant, which achieved £22,680. A standout piece was Lot 17, a rediscovered aquamarine and diamond pendant that also sold for £43,950. This pendant had a fascinating provenance, having been smuggled out of Russia in 1918 in the hem of a dress. Our specialists identified it as a Fabergé creation through a scratched inventory number on its gallery.
Fabergé’s iconic miniature egg pendants also drew significant attention. Lot 106, an enamel and gem-set egg pendant necklace, sold for £52,700. The necklace comprised forty-one egg pendants, including fourteen crafted by Fabergé workmasters Fedor Afanasiev and August Hollming, among others. Among the objects of vertu, standout items included Lot 59, a silver-gilt guilloché enamel miniature vase that sold for £38,950; Lot 78, a gold, silver-gilt, and enamel taper stick holder that fetched £32,700; and Lot 9, a silver-gilt, gold, enamel, and diamond photograph frame, which achieved £31,450.
