Buying at auction can be a brilliant way of acquiring original works of art at an affordable level. An auction house, with its range of sales and items available, can be an amazing source of inspiration for private collectors and an interesting way to start an art collection or add to an already established one.
In Dreweatts’ Art Online sale, there are a number of works with a starting bid of as little as £10, including works by artists such as Frank Dobson, John Piper, Veronica Bailey, Samuel Lamorna Birch and Alistair Grant. Highlighted here are a few pieces that might be worth keeping an eye on and saving to your watchlist ready for the auction taking place on 14 April.
This striking photograph by renowned British photographer Fay Godwin captures the calm and serenity that falls across the landscape. The balanced composition is in monochrome, typical of Godwin’s style. A popular and important British photographer, this work would be an exciting addition to any collectors looking to develop a photography collection.
An eye for detail is certainly a great way to describe Nougarède’s style. Nougarède focuses the viewer’s attention onto a single spot. The area surrounding the focal point is fluid, simple and peaceful. The works by Nougarède included in this auction all come from the ‘Breaking Surface’ series which explores the movement of water, capturing droplets of water as they touch the surface, and the ripples as they journey across the water.
This large-scale abstract work by established British artist George Blacklock is made up of four sheets that have been combined to create this complete composition. Blacklock has been represented by Flowers Galleries since 1996 where he has produced a body of work which covers the relationship between figuration and abstraction and the role of colour. The individual shapes float across the surface sweeping down and across, moving around the sheets.
