In the spirit of the upcoming Milan Design Week, our attention focuses naturally on modernity and the design‑led pieces shaping today’s interiors. In our forthcoming Art & Interiors auction, we are pleased to present various private collections, including a selection of items from a bespoke London villa by international interior designer Jean-Louis Deniot.
Jean-Louis Deniot’s signature harmony between classical terminology and contemporary aesthetics is illustrated throughout the collection, such as when Lot 1087, a Louis XVI‑style chair becomes a refined counterbalance to the bold modernity of Lot 1070, a striking contemporary artwork. Together, they demonstrate Deniot’s talent for allowing historic forms and modern design language to coexist seamlessly, echoing the spirit of innovation celebrated in Milan.
Building on this dialogue between eras, the sale also turns toward the art of nature - an enduring source of inspiration in both classical and contemporary design. Pieces such as Lot 1040, a set of botanical studies, and Lot 1190, a serene landscape, bring a sense of organic calm that complements the modernity - their delicate renderings of foliage resonating with today’s renewed appreciation for biophilic design. Together, these works extend the conversation begun by Lots 1070 & 1087, grounding modern design language in the timeless poetry of the natural world.
Offering a fascinating interplay between the historic and the modern, we have Lot 1154, a French tapestry. Though its verdant motifs draw directly from nature, the piece is machine‑woven, thus acting as a reminder of how contemporary production methods reinterpret centuries‑old decorative traditions. This contrast between the mechanical and the organic gives the tapestry a distinctly modern edge, allowing its rhythmic foliage and classical patterning to sit comfortably within today’s design‑led interiors. By merging natural imagery with industrial technique, this piece becomes a bridge between eras, proving that historic patterns can be seamlessly, and strikingly, reintroduced into modern homes.
