Happy International Women's Day! This year we are celebrating by hosting the wonderful Art on a Postcard International Women’s Day Auction.
Art on a Postcard invited female identifying artists to create exceptional original postcard sized artworks to help raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust, to support their Women’s Prison Team.
Today we asked our female auction specialists to pick out some of their favourite Lots from the auction.
Jennie Fisher, Head of Dreweatts Picture department and Modern and Contemporary Art specialist, picked out Lot 125, Study for Field (2), 2021 by Haruka Hashiguchi.
"I was immediately drawn to this work. The intricate use of embroidery provides a completely different experience and muted white tones emanate an air of calm and order which appealed to me."
Lucy Darlington, Dreweatts Picture specialist, picked out Lot 277, The Bird's Tale, 2021 by Chloë Manasseh.
"The simplicity of each brush stroke adds to a feeling of depth and movement despite the limited colour palette employed in this work. The blue and white remind me of a 17th century Dutch ceramic tile depicting exotic birds newly discovered in a foreign land."
Francesca Whitham, Dreweatts Picture specialist, picked out Lot 302, Venus, 2021 by Caroline Millar.
"I am particularly drawn to the subdued colour palette and the use of mixed media and collage to create this striking postcard. I love the way Millar has incorporated word into the design, as a collector of vintage postcards, I find this technique particularly interesting and it makes me want to study the work further and find out more about the meaning behind the words."
Tessa Parry, Dreweatts Jewellery specialist, picked out Lot 250, Entitled (Repeat), 2021 by Real Warnants.
"I love the fun element to this postcard, with the girl in her smart traditional Victorian style dress with her faithful hound looking at her with adoration, as they sit upon a flashy and exotic zebra. I like how the artist has made the composition pop with the use of the bright colours in the red gift bow and the girl's pink outfit."
Yingwen Tao, Dreweatts Chinese and Asian Art specialist, picked out Lot 37, Two Birds, 2020 by Anita Klein.
"I like the innocence that the two birds convey here. I hope that we can all have that innocence and love for nature no matter how old we are now or will be."
Ania Hanrahan, Dreweatts Autographs and Ephemera specialist, picked out Lot 65, New Horizons 1, 2020 by Nimmi Hutnik
"Here the warm colours draw you in. I like the minimalist approach which the artist has used here with the juxtaposition of the bright colours on a plain ground."
Emma Terry, Head of Dreweatts Valuations department, picked out Lot 35, Mother of Two, 2020 by Anita Klein.
"This picture by celebrated artist Anita Klein is a particular favourite of mine. The artist is known for capturing tender, reflective, moments inspired by her own family life and the use of bold lines and bright colours. I was immediately drawn to the warmth of this picture, bringing a smile to my face and reminiscent of my own family life."
