Since 1992, Montblanc have paid tribute to important writers with their limited edition Writers Edition collection. The series celebrates authors from antiquity and the classical period, through to modern writers. Every year a new model is released, with each edition designed to honour or represent the literary creations of a particular author. These models typically include a facsimile of the signature of the author to whom that edition is dedicated.
This autumn, we are thrilled to have Dreweatts first standalone fine pen auction, taking place on Thursday 26 September. Comprising three private collections, this sale offers the most comprehensive selection of Montblanc limited edition pens to come to market in recent years, including the whole Writers Editions series from 1992-2022.
Also taking place on Thursday 26 September, our sister company, Forum Auctions have their Fine Books, Manuscripts and Works on Paper auction, offering a number of works by authors also represented in the Montblanc series. Ahead of the auctions, we take a look at some of the highlights.
A giant of American 20th century literature, Ernest Hemingway's influence continues to ripple through today’s writers. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. His novel A Farewell to Arms (1929) was based on his experiences as an ambulance driver on the Italian Front in WW1 and is among the best fiction to come out of the First World War. Forum Auctions will be offering a first edition of A Farewell to Arms in their auction this September (Lot 344). It is an attractive dust-jacketed example of one of Hemingway's key novels.
In our Fine Pen auction, we are pleased to be offering the Ernest Hemingway limited edition ballpoint pen (Lot 69), and the limited edition fountain pen (Lot 70). Released in 1992, this was the first in the Writers Edition collection and is now considered one of the most desirable models from the series.

Forum Auctions will be offering a second American edition of Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas with illustrations by Alphonse de Neuville and Edouard Riou (Lot 310). Published in 1873, this is one of the earliest editions available, due to the exceptional rarity of the first edition, as the majority of the stock was thought to have been lost in the Great Boston Fire of 1872.
Virginia Woolf was a pivotal novelist and publisher of the 20th century. A central member of the 'Bloomsbury Group,' she also co-founded the Hogarth Press with her husband, Leonard Woolf. Inspired by Virginia Woolf's The Waves, the barrel and cap feature a wave-like design. Each piece is adorned with a faceted ruby, symbolizing Woolf's avant-garde style. It is interesting to note that this is the only model in the series not to feature a facsimile signature, as the ancient Greek poet's actual signature is unknown.
