Already consigned is a rare new discovery, a recently authenticated mother and child sculpture in lead by Henry Moore, estimated at £30,000-50,000 (+ fees). The work was conceived in c. 1939-1940 at a time when Moore was experimenting with casting in different materials and incorporating elements in string and wire.
This very special piece comes from the former collection of architectural publisher and editor, Hubert de Cronin Hastings (1902-1986), whose near fifty year stewardship of the Architectural Review saw him shed a light on the many challenges and debates posed across the architectural world during this transformative period.
The sale also comprises a group of works by John Piper (1903-1992), including a beautiful mixed media and collage from 1933. The vase of flowers by an open window is one of a number of comparable works that Piper produced on the same theme during the early 1930s. It was during this period that Piper was experimenting with modernism, combining pure abstraction with a more representational, yet distinctive, style that was to characterise his work for the rest of his career. Piper pays homage to the work of Braque and Picasso with the use of collage, which he combines with a more traditional English view of the coast, the richness of the blue offset by the shimmer of the applied silver foil. The group also includes a number of further works on paper and prints by the artist.
Following the highly successful sale at Dreweatts in October of works by Lancashire artist, Arthur Delaney from the collection of Selwyn Demmy, we are also pleased to present a second group from the same collection. Delaney’s Lowry-inspired depictions of Manchester and Stockport are imbued with a sense of nostalgia for a romantic past and comprise many well-known landmarks.
To compliment the sculpture by Henry Moore, the sale also offers another work with a special provenance by Elisabeth Frink. Small Male Figure was conceived in 1986 and cast in an edition of 15. The work was a commission from the artist by the National Ankylosing Spondylitis Society and comes from the collection of Dr. Allan St. John Dixon MD FRCP OBE (1922-2014), who was one of the founding members.
In terms of contemporary art, Dreweatts will be pleased to offer a work by Los Angeles based street artist, Mr Brainwash. Beautiful Life - Mickey and Minnie Mouse forms part of a series of works featuring the iconic carton characters set against the backdrop of iconic cultural and artistic influences, including Warhol’s Marilyn and JFK.
