Our auction 'Weston Hall and the Sitwells: A Family Legacy', taking place on the 16 & 17 November, will offer an extraordinary collection of lace. The lace collection discovered in the attics at Weston Hall is an important collection spanning the 17th to 20th centuries, and had been largely forgotten. Some of the pieces were purchased whilst some were gifted by various relatives in the late 19th and early 20th century. It was carefully labelled and thus put away for storage in 1937. Some of museum quality, this collection appears to have been left untouched for the past three quarters of a century. Within the accompanying letters and notes, there are references to family members and purchases, providing interesting historic provenance. Here we take a look at some of the highlights.
Here we have a beautiful Brussels bobbin stole, dating from the early 19th century. Each end is delicately worked with tiers of assorted flowers. This forms part of Lot 263.
It comes together with an accompanying letter dated 14 March 1899 from Brompton House, Scarborough. The letter states that this veil was bought for £100, a lot of money for the time, by Hon. Fredrick Sylvester North Douglas, and details that it was worn by Lady Mary Hely Hutchinson and also by her eldest daughter Harriet Frances, Lady Hanmer, at their weddings.
The letter also tells of how 'this veil was lost sight of for some years & then found quite accidentally, in a drawer of a chest in her bedroom at Weston Hall by her youngest daughter Minny, Mrs Arthington Worsley.'
In Lot 264, amongst an assortment of other items, we have this Liberty, Arts & Crafts design embroidered silk box. As per the accompanying letter, we know that this was worked by 'Eddie' and made up by Liberty. It was given as a birthday gift to Georgiana Mary Thomas, and one can see her initials 'G M T' monogrammed on the lid.
We then have a wonderful selection of 17th century fine Italian lace. A highlight is Lot 267, which features exceptionally fine examples, including this Lacis/Fillet lace which has been edged with needle lace.
There is also Lot 266, which comprises fine Italian 17th and 18th century lace examples, including this collar. It is designed using Venetian Rose Point lace, and was reconstructed in the 19th century.
