Coming up on 14 & 15 June, we have our two-day Interiors auction. Day One will start with selected items from the Collection of Elizabeth Gage MBE (Lots 1-56). The collection offers an eclectic array of decorative objects, including furniture, works of art, Asian Art, pictures, ceramics and garden ornament and furniture.
Elizabeth Gage MBE is a British jewellery designer and master goldsmith who has been creating collectable jewellery for over 50 years. She has been described by the trade as someone "whose large rings, historical references, gorgeous stones and elaborate craftsmanship set the tone for a whole generation" (The Jewellery Editor).
Elizabeth's pieces constantly attract the attention of top fashion magazines and celebrities due to their unique qualities. Some of her designs are even included in the permanent jewellery collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours and has recently published a book about her jewellery and her inspirations called The Unconventional Gage.
The Old School was originally built as a Protestant Free School in 1824 by Robert Abraham. It is a fascinating building complete with mullion windows, an array of gothic detailing customary for schools at that time, and even a central turret.
The building was skilfully restored and provided a blank canvas on which to implement an exuberant yet somehow eminently compatible style.
Elizabeth’s approach to the design of her interiors is as unique as the jewels she creates. Her jewellery combines different elements in her work which she chooses for their individual beauty; exquisite stones, ancient bronzes, beautiful carvings, baroque pearls, in fact anything where the shape and colour inspire her.
Not only did the house itself resemble one of those fabulous jewellery caskets of the renaissance period but each item within the house a work of art, clearly chosen for their decorative originality and individual merits. Lifting the lid (or roof) on this oversized jewellery box, we see that, whether it be comfort, colour or pattern, the Gage collection explodes like a firework to the senses offering the most charmingly eclectic interiors whilst also representing the design ideology of its illustrious owner.
