It is an estate that goes back to the 1850s, and the first to recognise the value in each vineyard. A winery that gave Barolo the moniker “the King of wines and the wines of Kings”, it was one of the first Italian wines exported across the world - including early Antarctic expeditions!

Trodden by five generations of the family, the deep footprints of Burlotto are lucidly seen throughout the history of Barolo. Arguably, what we drink from Piedmont today can be traced directly back to the vision of Giovan Burlotto in the 19th century.

Situated in the most northern part of Piedmont in Verduno. The 18th century winery is one of the most beautiful that you can imagine. With brick vaulted ceilings; pastel decorated walls; and false windows painted with foreboding looking ancestors, perhaps making sure that they are doing things properly!

The extraordinary variety of vineyards and grapes are scattered across the region. It is almost impossible to describe without walking the ground yourself. This epic sweeping family saga has navigated the ebbs and flows of the last 170 years and is now rightly considered one of the world’s greatest estates.

From a simple Dolcetto to a Barolo Cannubi and everything in between. For someone new to Piedmont, there is no better place to start. You old stagers will know the drill! For both, this is a remarkable and rare opportunity to own these wines. I am not going to suggest highlights, but just a chance to explore and experience the breadth and depth of it. The auction will take place on Tuesday 25 August (starting at 10.30am BST) at Dreweatts Newbury, but please note all wine and spirits are stored off-site at LCB Eton Park. Bidding is available online, by telephone, by commission bids or in person at Dreweatts.
